During the Fall season a few hundred or so polar bears congregate around the Churchill area waiting for the ice to freeze in Hudson's Bay so they can go out to hunt (Ring and other Seals). Contrary to what some people believe; polar bears do not migrate, rather they are for the most part solitary animals. Polar bears have been known to travel thousands of kilometers away from their point of origin and never return. On the other hand most polar bears have been known to travel only a couple of hundred kilometers and return almost exactly to a set geographic location on an annual basis technically known as seasonal fidelity. However to suggest that a polar bear migrates would mean: the periodic passage from one region to another for feeding or breeding. I doubt going on to Hudson Bay to hunt justifies the term migration which is so often misused.

Polar bears have excellent dexterity and pass their time playing with what ever they can get their paws on, including this tire! They can sometimes be quite humorous to watch. This playful male found a discarded tire and curiously explored its geometric shape, pawing, licking and nibbling, but the best was when two other bears joined in on the fun trying to steal it from one another. At one point this large male bear started rolling the tire upright along the tundra escaping with his trophy, then with great surprise, he laid on his back raising the tire in the air, as if to say, "I am the champion!"
