This mother polar bear and her cubs future survival are at the hart of persistent controversy surrounding global warming and or climate change. Over the last two decades the polar bear population in the Western Hudson Bay (WHB) region has begun to display the adverse negative effects of a warmer and more volatile environ.

The mean average weight (maw) of the WHB polar bear population has dropped by about sixty pounds in the last 15 years, indicating a decrease in diet and/or a increase in energy expended to obtain their diet.

Negative effects on the bears overall health can also be evidenced by the overall decreased litter size. At one time not too long ago it was common to see a mother with three healthy cubs, now it is difficult to see a mother with two healthy cubs, one cub may soon to be the norm.

Polar bears are masters of survival and undoubtedly will be put to the test. Some of the future adverse consequences could result in a redistribution in range & numbers of the most southerly sub-populations as polar bears would likely prefer the cooler ice-fast regions of their domain.

In the Churchill region there is a noticeable increase in property damage and fatal bear/human conflicts. Increases in both property damage and bear/human conflict is most likely the result of changes in the dynamics of ice cover in Hudson Bay . Reduced ice-fastness in Hudson Bay and the rest of the Arctic will continue as the globe heats up. The polar bear currently relies on the ice to survive, whereby they hunt "Ring" and other seal - their primary food source.

Can the polar bear live without the seal and the ice?
