Polar bear cubs are usually born in December or January and at birth weigh about 1-2 lbs. The cubs are born nearly stark naked but quickly grow 10 15 times their birth weight by the time they permanently leave the den site with their mother. The first lesson that the mother polar bear teaches its young, is to stay close. This newborn cub obviously feels the security provided by its mother and indeed the polar bear embodies a lot of human attributes. In many ways the polar bear's instinct for survival and protection of its young rival that of our own. Mankind's quest for survival often conflicts with the polar bear's wild instinct for survival. The polar bear needs a strong healthy ecology that provides food, shelter and protection, likewise man needs a strong healthy economy for survival. However it is ultimately up to mankind to achieve balance with nature. |
