"Come on kiss me you silly dog"! These two eventually nuzzled up to each other and had a great time playing. This polar bear, over the course of a few years, taught several other polar bears how to approach than play with these magnificent dogs. The sad part is this polar bear was legally killed by Inuit hunters a short time later. Hunting accounts for well over 90 percent of polar bear mortality rates. In Manitoba alone, approximately 35 of 55 hunting permits are loaned annually to the Nunuvut Government in the Kivalliq district along the Hudson Bay coast. These permits allow Inuit hunters to harvest polar bear for economic benefit. In Canada approximately 850 polar bears per year are killed legally for economic benefit, this number does not include other fatalities, such as: poaching, fatal bear/human conflict, resource management, scientific handling, etc. |
