While out on the tundra in the early morning during a golden sunrise I noticed a sickly Polar Bear cub been dragged by its mother across this small lake. It appeared the cub could not walk on its hind legs, a problem usually associated with a form of rickets caused from a lack of certain vitamins in mother’s milk. This large male had also seen the vulnerability of this cub. Male Polar Bears, will under certain situations stalk, attack and kill small cubs either for pleasure, food or to mate with the mother. On this occasion mating season was still a few months away, the big male did not look like he needed food so therefore I managed to take this photograph before scaring him away. |
