Whilst on one of my photographic journeys in the Canadian Arctic, I came across this Inukshuk (Inook-suik; Inukshuk; Inuksuk) built atop some lichen covered granite rocks. This ancient figurine was silhouetted by the midnight sun which illuminated the vast waters of Hudson Bay. Inukshuks: (figurines of a man, made by balancing snow blocks or stones, one upon another) were originally used by the Inuit peoples of the Canadian Arctic to scare caribou herds towards the hunters in anticipation for an ambush. Today the Inukshuk is more of an ancient symbol, however they are still used as beacons and markers for the modern indigenous traveler to navigate the vast polar landscapes. |
